Hauling out and antifouling is one of those jobs every boatie either learns to do well or pays dearly to avoid. Get it right and your boat is faster, cheaper to run, and kinder to the water it floats in. Get it wrong and you are back on the hardstand within months, or worse, washing a season’s worth of copper-laden growth straight into the marina. Here is how to do it properly, and how to do it cleanly — which, as it happens, turn out to be the same thing.
When the Bottom Tells You It Is Time
Reading the Growth
Every hull tells you when it has had enough, you just have to know how to read it. The first sign is usually performance: the boat feels sluggish, you are burning more fuel to hold the same speed, or the sailing boat that used to ghost along in a light breeze now needs a solid ten knots to get moving. By the time the slime turns to weed and the weed turns to the hard stuff — barnacles, tubeworm, the occasional optimistic oyster — you are well overdue.
In most of New Zealand’s waters, a coat of antifoul gives you somewhere between twelve and twenty-four months of useful life, depending on the paint, the water temperature, and how much the boat actually moves. A boat that sits idle in a warm, nutrient-rich marina corner will foul faster than one that gets used every weekend. Warm northern harbours foul faster than cooler southern ones, so a Whangarei boat and a Bluff boat on the same paint will not be on the same schedule.
The honest test is to put on a mask and have a look, or send a diver down if you cannot. A light film of slime is normal and not worth hauling for. A beard of weed and a scattering of barnacles means the clock has run out, and every week you leave it costs you fuel, speed, and eventually a much harder scrub when you do haul.
Picking Your Season
There is a reason hardstands are busy in spring and quiet in the depths of winter, and it is not just the weather. Antifoul and most of the prep coatings need a reasonable temperature to cure properly — painting in a cold, damp August week is asking for a finish that never hardens off and lifts within the season. Late spring through autumn is the sweet spot for most of the country.
The other half of the timing question is the marina’s calendar and your own. Booking a travelift slot in October, when half the fleet wants to be back in the water for summer, takes planning. The yards fill up, the contractors are flat out, and a job you could knock over in a relaxed three days mid-winter becomes a scramble. If you can be flexible, hauling in the shoulder seasons gets you better availability and an operator who is not watching the clock.
Weather matters once you are out, too. You want a dry window for the actual painting — rain on fresh antifoul is a wasted coat. Watch the forecast the same way you would for a passage, and do not start sanding on the morning a front is due in.
Out of the Water: The Haul-Out Itself

The Travelift and the Hardstand
The haul-out itself is over in twenty minutes and is one of the more nerve-wracking moments of boat ownership, watching several tonnes of your boat swing in a pair of fabric slings. A good yard operator does this dozens of times a week and makes it look routine, but it pays to be there, to know where your through-hulls and transducers sit, and to mark the sling positions so nothing gets crushed.
Once the boat is up, it gets walked to a stand or chocked on the hardstand and the pressure-washing starts straight away. Washing the hull while the growth is still wet is far easier than letting it bake on for a day — dried weed and slime turn to concrete and double the work. This is also the moment the environmental side of the job begins, because everything coming off that hull has to go somewhere.
Know what you are paying for before you book. Yards charge for the lift, for hardstand days, and often for power and water, and the bill climbs if your three-day job drifts into a week. Have your gear, your paint, and your plan ready before the boat comes out, not after.
Prep Is the Whole Game
Anyone who tells you antifouling is just slapping on a coat of paint has never done it properly. The painting is the quick part; the preparation is where the work and the result live. After the initial water-blast, you are looking at scraping off any loose or flaking old antifoul, sanding back the high spots, and dealing with any blisters or bare patches down to the gelcoat.
A hull that is sound from last season might only need a light key-sand and a wipe down, while one that has been built up with years of paint may need a serious strip back. If you are going bare — back to gelcoat — you are into primers and barrier coats before any antifoul goes near it, and that is a bigger job that is worth getting right because it sets up the next decade.
Sanding antifoul is genuinely unpleasant and genuinely hazardous: the dust contains the same biocides that kill growth, which means you do not want it in your lungs or washing into the harbour. A proper respirator, overalls, and a sander with dust collection are not optional. This is the point where doing the job right and doing the job cleanly turn out to be the same thing.
Choosing and Applying the Paint

Ablative or Hard
The first real decision is the type of antifoul, and it comes down to how you use the boat. Ablative paints wear away slowly as the boat moves through the water, constantly exposing fresh biocide. They suit boats that get used regularly, they do not build up year on year, and they are forgiving if you are not a perfectionist with the roller. The trade-off is that a boat that sits still for months gets less benefit from the self-polishing action.
Hard antifouls set to a tougher film that holds up to scrubbing and suits faster boats or anyone who likes to keep the hull burnished. They can be hauled, dried, and relaunched without losing their punch, which ablatives do not love. The downside is build-up: hard paint accumulates over the seasons and eventually needs stripping back.
Then there is the question of copper. Most effective antifouls still rely on copper compounds as the active biocide, and that is exactly why the wash-water and scrapings need containing — copper is toxic to the marine life you are trying to keep off your hull and everything else in the marina besides. Some boaties are moving to lower-copper or copper-free coatings; they cost more and the jury is still out on longevity, but the direction of travel is clear.
Rolling It On
Application is the satisfying bit. Most antifoul goes on with a roller and a brush for the tight spots around through-hulls, the keel, and the waterline. The golden rule is to follow the can: respect the overcoat times, the minimum and maximum recoat windows, and the temperature range, because antifoul that is rushed or painted in the wrong conditions simply does not perform.
Two coats is standard, with a third along the waterline and leading edges where the wear is heaviest. Mask off your boot-top cleanly if you want it to look sharp, and remember that the patch the boat sits on — where the stands and the chocks touch — needs doing too. A good yard will let you shift the boat or re-chock so you can paint those spots before relaunch.
Give it the cure time the can specifies before the boat goes back in. It is tempting to splash straight after the last coat, especially with a travelift slot ticking, but antifoul that has not hardened off will wash straight back off and you will have paid for paint that is now in the harbour rather than on your hull.
Keeping It Out of the Water

Why the Hardstand Matters
Here is the part that separates a good haul-out from a careless one. Everything you remove from that hull — the weed, the slime, the flakes of old antifoul, the sanding dust, the wash-water — is loaded with biocide and biological material that has no business going into the marina. A barnacle scraped off and left to wash down the drain takes a dose of copper with it, and multiplied across a whole yard that adds up fast.
Most reputable hardstands in New Zealand now operate as contained sites, with sealed or bunded wash-down areas that capture the runoff, filter it, and dispose of the solids properly rather than letting it drain to the water. Regional councils increasingly require this, and for good reason: a marina is a semi-enclosed body of water where contaminants concentrate rather than disperse. Using a yard that takes containment seriously is one of the most consequential clean-boating choices you will make.
If you are hauling somewhere informal — a tidal grid, a quiet ramp, your own hardstand — the responsibility is yours. Lay down tarps to catch scrapings and dust, bag and bin the solid waste, and never water-blast where the runoff goes straight to the sea.
The Small Habits That Add Up
Clean haul-outs are mostly a matter of small, deliberate habits rather than grand gestures. Sweep up sanding dust rather than hosing it away. Collect paint chips and empty tins for proper disposal — antifoul tins are hazardous waste, not general rubbish. Catch your roller trays and brushes before the solvent and residue go down a drain.
A diver with a soft scrub between haul-outs can extend the life of your antifoul, but only if the marina permits in-water cleaning, and many now restrict or ban it precisely because uncontrolled scrubbing sheds biocide and fouling organisms straight into the water. Check the local rules before you arrange a clean — what is fine in one harbour is prohibited in the next, and the restrictions are usually there to stop the spread of marine pests between regions.
None of this is about being precious. It is about recognising that the same water you are trying to enjoy is the water everything washes into, and that a marina full of boaties who each take a little care stays a far better place to keep a boat than one where nobody does.
Antifouling is not glamorous, it is not cheap, and it always seems to land on the one weekend you would rather be sailing. But a well-prepped, well-painted hull pays you back all season in speed and fuel, and a clean haul-out keeps the harbour we all share in decent shape for the next boat up the travelift. Book early, prep properly, contain your mess, and respect the cure times. The boat will thank you, the water will thank you, and you will not be back here before you have to be.

The bit about catching your wash-down water is spot on and still gets ignored at plenty of yards. A sealed, drained hardstand is the difference between a tidy operation and slowly poisoning the basin everyone’s moored in. Good to see it framed as just part of the job rather than a lecture.
